12-1-10 2011 California Tournament Schedule Posted
Go to the Events/CA NSCA Shoots tab for the 2011 registered NSCA tournament schedule. Note that shoot numbers are not yet available, but they will be updated as received.
11-16-10 Proposal Made by NSCA EC to Fund TV Series!
Ballots were mailed to the national delegates today asking for approval of an increase in target fees (from $.03 to $.04) in order to provide initial funding for the production of a TV series showcasing the shotgun sports. The project would use accumulated target fees for three years starting in 2011 to jumpstart production, in the anticipation that the program would become self-funding in the second year. Production would start in mid-2011 and the program would air starting in January of 2012. Read the background here.
11-16-10 2011 NSCA Major Events Page Updated
The initial posting of the schedule for next year's major NSCA events has been made. It is still early, with many events not yet scheduled, but at least for the early part of the year you can start planning!
10/31/10 California Shooter Takes National Ladies Title
California shooter Amy Rule outshot 2009 Lady Champion Ashleigh Hafley in a dramatic shootoff to win the 2010 National Lady Champion title at the National Sporting Clays Championships in San Antonio this past week. Both competitors were tied at 234/300 after the four course scores were tallied, leading to the exciting duel at the finish. Michelle Wampler also prevailed in a three-way shootoff to finish as Lady 3rd with a 224.
Brad Kidd (LA) held off a stiff challenge by Brandon Powell to win the Open Champion title by one target at 273/300. The best Open finish for a California shooter was by CA State Champion Zach Kienbaum (260) finishing at M11.
Other California shooters that scored well include Matt Pandol (223) who finished overall Sub-Junior 5th; Chris Claxton (221), Sub-Junior M1; Justin Fox (250), Junior M1; and Desirae Edmunds (221), Lady A1.
Complete scores here. California winners here!
7-18-10 USA Takes World FITASC Open Win!
The American Senior/Open team took the Gold medal at Arezzo, Italy, finishing with a team score of 744 to second-place France at 733 and third-place Italy at 729. The individual Gold was won by George Digweed (197/200), followed by Ben Husthwaite (195/200) winning the Silver and Anthony Materase (192/200) taking the Bronze. Americans John Wooley took individual Silver in Veterans, while Michael Taylor took the individual Gold and Joe Canty took individual Silver, both in SuperVet. Complete results at www.fitasc.com.
7-15-10 The English Sweep at Lakenheath!
The English swept the top three spots at the recent World English Championships in Lakenheath, U.K., with Ben Husthwaite (202) taking first place honors followed by Paul Simpson (201) and George Digweed (200). Even with a top US finish of 15th place by Scot Robertson, combined TeamUSA scores were clearly good enough to win the overall Waktare Trophy, with 2723 combined points to second place England's 2678 and third place Wales at 1295. The Senior/Open team finished second to the English by a scant 3 points (857 to 860!) while others in the US contingent did well in several team and individual categories. Congratulations to all shooters representing the United States! Full results here.
Teams:
Gold, Ladies and Junior
Silver, Senior(Open) and Super Veteran
Bronze, Veterans
Individual:
Silver, Colt High Gun - Hunter Milligan

5-23-10 Jim Porter Inducted into CSCA Hall of Fame
Jim Porter, indomitable mentor and coach of the SoCal Top Guns youth shooting group, leader of the Triple-B Scholastic Clay Target Program, and NSCA Level III Instructor has been recognized as the initial inductee into the CSCA Hall of Fame and as the recipient of the Service Award named in his honor. Created to recognize those individuals "...who have shown dedication to the promotion and betterment of Sporting Clays in the state of California", the CSCA Hall of Fame Service Award will henceforth be known as the Jim Porter Service Award.
Long-term trap, skeet, and sporting clays shooter, Jim founded and maintains the Triple-B youth shooting program and was the California State Director for the National Scholastic Clay Target Program. He mentors, coaches and travels with the SoCal Top Guns, a non-profit competitive youth shooting team that competes at the State, Zone and National levels. Twenty-two of Jim’s students have made the TeamUSA, All State, All Zone, or All American Teams.
Jim is a Merit Badge Counselor for the Boy Scouts of America and introduces over a thousand scouts per year to shooting sports through his shooting program at Triple B. Jim teaches at NSCA Level I and II instructor courses in southern California and has also been an instructor at the Remington Shooting School.
In 2004 Jim was inducted into the NSCA Hall of Fame for his dedication to promoting youth in the shotgun shooting sports.
4-19-10 New National Team Races Announced
NSCA announced the formation of new National Sub-Gauge Teams and also a new National Class Team. As you would expect, the National Sub-Gauge Teams, one for each gauge (20g.-28g.-.410 bore), are formed using the All American points system, but counting just the relevant sub-gauge event results. National Class Team points are also calculated using a system similar to the All American points system but restricted to class.
For the National Small Gauge Teams, one for each gauge, there will be 10 members in the Open Class and each concurrent. All American Points earned in sub-gauge events will also continue to count toward the overall All American Teams.
For the National Class Team, a system similar to the All State and All Zone system is used, but just those points earned in class count. Points are awarded by rank in class, with the multiplier being 4-3-2-1 for the first four places in class and all ties for events with 100 or more entries, and 3-2-1 for the first three places and all ties for events with at least 10 but less than 100 entries. These multipliers are applied to the total number of shooters in each class for award points. The top ten members in each class will be recognized.
3-15-10 All-Zone (zone 7) and California All-State Teams Announced
The 2010 All-Zone (Zone 7) and California All-State Teams have been published. Also note that at a recent meeting of the NSCA Executive Council it was decided to modify slightly how the standings for these teams will be selected starting with the 2010 race for the 2011 teams. In the past, if a shooter made a team with higher precedence (all-American over All-Zone over All-State), that shooter was removed from the lower precedence team list and the standings recalculated. Since removing a shooter changes the points allocated for the Zone or state shoots, the standings could change. Starting in 2011, once a shooter makes a higher precedence team, the standings will NOT be recalculated but rather shooters just move upward to replace anyone removed. This will make it easier to track your position in the team races based on the published standings.
2-22-10 Californians on 2010 NSCA All-American Teams and TeamUSA
Congratulations to the thirteen California NSCA members earning positions on the 2010 NSCA All-American Teams. Five shooters also earned positions on the TeamUSA-Sporting while one California member made the TeamUSA-FITASC team. A single Californian made all three teams! Special Congratulations to Zach Kienbaum!

2-21-10 CSCA Mailing List
The CSCA board of directors has decided to construct an email list for the benefit of California shooters who would like to be alerted to timely news regarding our sport, events, and other matters that may be of interest. This list will not be sold or distributed in any way, commercial or otherwise. It will also be used to solicit feedback from our membership regarding issues that come before the board. Click here to add your name to this list.
2-15-10 Solicitation for 2011 CA State Championship
All California clubs have been contacted regarding bid proposals for hosting the 2011 California State Sporting Clays Championship. Proposals must be submitted by 3-15-10. A preliminary decision (pending negotiations with the potential host club) will be reached by the CSCA board of directors by 5-1-10.
2-1-10 Online Registration Open for World English and FITASC World Sporting Championships
For those of you considering combining a summer holiday outing with some international style clays shooting, the registration sites are up for both the World English Sporting Championships to be held 7/10/10 at Lakenheath Clay Target Center near Mildenhall, in Suffolk, England and the FITASC World Sporting Championships to be held the following week, 7/15/10, at Club Laterina, near Ponticino, Italy. It isn't often that we have two events of this caliber on back to back weekends! Book your flights and get your registrations completed. They will both likely fill up quickly.
You will need to create an account at the FITASC site to register online, but if you preserver (the web site is new and not totally debugged) you can do so with just your NSCA membership number.
1-30-10 Advisory Council Rules Committee Agenda
There are likely to be others added in real time at the Advisory Council meeting next week, but here is the list of proposed agenda items for the Rules, Classification and Safety Committee. A bit of commentary has been added. (The wording is from the NSCA generated agenda.)
1. Show birds: Should they be limited to a maximum of 2 pair? Presumably this is an attempt to limit the excessive numbers of show targets that the first shooter in a squad gets to view. This is an annual visit to the question of what is "right" when it comes to view pairs. The current rule says "The first person on every squad shall be allowed to view a good presentation of targets from within the shoot station. This is not limited to one pair." Most enlightened club managers don't worry too much about this rule, but I guess someone is concerned about abuse. Two views is pretty normal when it isn't clear which bird of a true pair should be attempted first. It sounds like the current rule is adequate in that further restrictions would almost certainly rule out a corner case lurking somewhere wherein more than two pairs would be reasonable.
2. Punches – Should we change giving out punches with only 3 – 9 shooters in class? Another alternative is to leave it alone and make a change for just A-Master Class back to 5 – 9 in class to get a punch. You will note that this isn't all that clear, but I think what is being suggested is that (a) we undo the present form of the rule that gives one punch for HOA and all ties when there are only 5-9 in class, or (b) we undo the rule for at least for M-A classes. This was a change in 2009, aimed at situations in Rabbitt Hollow where only 5 shooters live in the surrounding area. The punch issue is likely to be a hot topic, as it has been for the past several years, and is even more likely (hopefully) to get a study group assigned to the problem of inevitable migration to and crowding of the higher classes.
3. Small Gauge Punches - Should punches for the small gauges be de-rated by 50%? Not sure about this one either, but the idea seems to be to reduce the number of punches you get in the small gauge events relative to most everything else. This is also an old topic. It usually turns into an argument about everything else: why should 5-stand punches count as much? What about the prelim? etc., etc.
4. Punches – Change the number of punches needed to move from A Class to AA Class from 10 to 15 Punches. Okay, so 15 for A to AA. then what about AA-Master? The whole problem needs to be reviewed, not just this piece.
5. Punches – Change the number of punches needed to move from AA Class to Master Class from 16 to 23 Punches. Oh, okay here we go. Still doesn't solve the problem of a system based on accumulation, versus relatively near-term (last 12 months or last 20 shoots?) performance. What if the combination of these rule changes all passed? You need 23 punches from the main event only to advance to Master class. That would think things out. But what about all those already there that decline to be down-classed at year end?
6. Should we reverse the policy that a shooter that moves up in class can not be down-classed for a period of 2 Years? This was a 2009 change and was aimed at shooters who punch up into Master class and then shoot badly for a few shoots and then beg to be reviewed and down-classed only to repeat the process. This is interpreted to be abusive behavior.
7. Should we add a Veteran Lady Class? I have been waiting for this one. The asymmetry created by having a Lady "concurrent" that is separate from the age related concurrents creates all kinds of weird scenarios. A single person could win HOA, Class, Lady, and Junior, for example. (Ashleigh has undoubtedly already done it!) I am sure the Lady "concurrent" was created to generate a separate playing field for Lady shooters, but it has its drawbacks. Why not just divide males and females like a lot of sports do? Then they would have separate classes and concurrents all unto themselves. A female could choose how she wanted to enter: Open or Lady.
8. Add a rule that states: A shooters score card shall be filled out by the Field Judge or if a Field Judge is not present then it can only be filled out by another NSCA member in good standings. Not a spouse, friend, girl or boy friend or a child. Recommend we remove “Individual Competitors” (from rule H.1.a, which would force all shooters to be shoot in a squad with more than one shooter) and force squadding. Ah, the integrity of the individual shooter. Or the individual shooter with a girlfriend score keeper. What if the girlfriend score keeper is also a shooter? Only an issue in small club shoots with no trappers keeping score (keep in mind that rule IV.G.3.A REQUIRES Field Judges at each station: "Field Judges will be required at each station, in sufficient number, to competently enforce all rules for the shooter, as well as to score the attempts accurately." If that were enforced, the proposed change is moot.
9. State Association – Can a State Association require a minimum 300 targets IN STATE (to avoid shooting in a penalty class)? The rule book (does) NOT state that the targets MUST be shot within the state. That seems clear enough. NSCA rules. Federalism vs. State's Rights!
10. Monthly Targets – Change the rule to allow clubs to run monthly targets for 14 consecutive days instead of the present rule that states it starts on the first day of the month and ends on the last day of that month. This would allow shooters to get credit for targets during the months of State/Zone/US Open towards minimum targets so they do not have to shoot penalty. Then why not just call them "unclassified targets" and let the interval be arbitrary? The intent of the requirement was for shooters to participate in the sport of competitive sporting clays, not pay a fee at the local club to register practice targets. A better question might be whether "monthly targets" should be used to satisfy ANY NSCA minimum target requirement, or even exist.
11. Governance Plan – Amend rule I.C.2.f – Registered Targets. Advisory Council members are required to shoot a minimum of 500 registered targets each year. CHANGE TO READ: Registered Targets. Advisory Council members are required to have shot a minimum of 500 registered targets each year, including the year immediately preceding their year of election. This requirement must be fulfilled by participation at registered tournaments, not league or monthly targets. See note above!
12. Discuss the iCLASS Handicap System. This is a discussion of the iClays handicap and classification system based on handicaps. It will be an interesting discussion.
13. Should each shooter get a class in all the different disciplines? Another annual question. Should a shooter have a separate class for each event? This is not unlike skeet, where you can be a AA 12 g. shooter and an A class .410 shooter. This proposal has failed each time over the past 5-6 years because there is not a majority consensus, although there probably is widespread acceptance that something needs to be done about the classification system.
14. Target piece breaking the second target – Should we use the ruling like FITASC? Shoot the pair over. The wording here isn't clear. The FITASC rules state (last line of Chapter 6: "In all doubles, if both targets are broken with one shot, the result is «ONE» and «ONE »". The big issue is how do you reasonably put the Field Judge/trapper in the position of determining whether the "second" target was broken by (a) a piece of the "first" target or (b) the pellets from the shot broke the "second" target? As stated, current FITASC Sporting rules say that the pair counts and that is the current statement in the NSCA Sporting rule book (IV.J.c.i "Should the shooter break both targets with either the first or second shot then the result will be scored as two hits." This has also been visited several times over the past few years, with the current rule the result for the above reason.
If you have comments or questions about the above that you would like to share please feel free to send a note!
1-21-10 Free NSCA Membership!
Ever wonder what it would be like to go to an NSCA registered tournament and compete in your class? Ever think about how fast you might be able to rise through the classes and become a Master Class shooter? Almost everyone has, but sometimes that extra effort it takes to become an NSCA member seems elusive. If you have never been an NSCA or NSSA member, now you can take advantage of an NSCA program that allows you to join for no cost. There are some limitations: you only get quarterly copies of Sporting Clays Magazine, you cannot vote in NSCA or CSCA elections, you must join at the same time you participate in a registered shoot, but you can shoot registered targets for the entire calendar year you join. Now is a great time to do it, since you have a whole season ahead of you!
The program is called a Complimentary Limited Membership and the forms can be downloaded, filled out, and returned directly to NSCA, or better yet, if you join through your local club at a registered tournament, they will get a target fee credit from CSCA to help offset the cost of your first tournament. A great deal for you, and it helps your club as well.
If you have never competed before, you will initially be designated a D class shooter and have the opportunity to start earning punches towards the next class. Aside from the fun of shooting in a registered event, joining NSCA is a great way to support Sporting Clays in general. They are the national organizing body for our sport and act as the domestic sanctioning body for most FITASC events as well.
Right now would be a great time to take advantage of this program and get ready for a fun packed year of competitive sporting clays!
1-01-10 The CSCA Board Welcomes New Members
The CSCA board consists of those directors elected at the annual meeting at the State Championships as well as those National Delegates from California currently serving and not already directors. Starting January 1, two such delegates will join the CSCA board for the 2010-2011 term: Alexandra Wampler and Jim Sparkes. We welcome these two new faces to the board!
12-29-09 California NSCA membership up 13%
End of year statistics for Calfornia show NSCA membership at 1163. This results in year/year growth for 2009 of 13.9%. California continues to be the state with the third largest NSCA membership, behind Texas (3262) and Florida (1182). Club and target statistics will be published in early February, but it is a good sign that membership is growing in our state. All shoot results are not yet recorded but it appears that the number of registered targets for 2009 will be up about 21% over last year.

It would appear to be good that our Open (not in a concurrent other than Lady) category is growing so well. Especially when the growth there is significantly stronger than in the Veteran-SuperVet-SenSuperVet combined. It is also a good sign that our Sub Junior and Junior concurrents are staying relatively well populated.
The national trend towards "crowding" of the upper classes is evident, giving more strength to the argument that the classes ought to be defined as a fixed percentage of the overall shooting population according to some measure of skill other than punch accumulation. This is sure to be a subject of discussion at the February Advisory Council meeting. It will be interesting to compare these numbers to the national membership when that data becomes available.
12-28-09 Robert Crow the new NSCA Sporting Clays Director
Robert Crow, presently the director of the Shooting Academy at Nemacolin, Farmington, Pennsylvania, will be taking on the responsibilities of the Director of Sporting Clays at NSCA headquarters in San Antonio, Texas, starting January 18th. He succeeds Michael Hampton, Jr., who recently took over the role of Executive Director (of both NSSA and NSCA).
12-11-09 NSCA to Return to Team USA Selection Shoots in 2010
Starting in the new year, TeamUSA members will be selected by competition at five designated selection shoots for both Sporting and International Sporting (FITASC). Events for 2010 have been decided by the International Committee, but starting in 2011 bids for selection shoots will be accepted. Each group of selection shoots will always include the National Championship and the US Open, as well as the World English when it is in the US (Sporting only). The lineup for 2010 is,

A different points system will also be used. The top ten finishers in the main events will get event points of 10 down to 1 points. For example, the top score and all ties gets 10 points, the second highest score and all ties gets 9 points, etc. For tie breaking purposes, World Cup style scores will also be computed and kept for anyone getting event points. This is a normalized score against the top score. For example, the top score gets 100 points. Say the top score was a 93 and the second highest score was a 90. That second highest score would get 90/93x100=96.77... points. If the third highest score was an 88, then 88/93x100=94.62... points would be earned. At the end of the year, if there are ties with event points, they will be resolved by the World Cup point totals corresponding to the scores used that resulted in the ties.
Lastly, and importantly, the lowest score out of the five will be tossed out for those that participate in all five selection shoots (for each shooting discipline). If a shooter attends fewer than five selection shoots, then all will count.
Scores and standings will be kept current and published on the NSCA web site promptly after each relevant event.
12-19-09 New Web Site
Effective today, we are airing our new web site. It is something of a work in progress and still has a lot of improvements to add. Having said that, I think you will agree that it is an improvement over the previous one, even in its current state. Please feel free to send comments and suggestions. The site is intended to provide access to current CSCA, NSCA, and even international sporting news and events. Check out the News section and Major Tournaments sections for this. The current CA shoot schedule is under Events/CA Shoots, while major shooting events, including all state and zone shoots, are listed in Events/Major Tournaments.
Browse the menu tabs and tell us what you think! Unlike our previous web site, this one is really easy (and inexpensive!) to change and see what works better. Enjoy!
12-03-09 CSCA Board Makes iClays Available To All California Clubs!
For the 2010 shooting year, all California CSCA clubs are invited to use the iClays shoot registration and scoring network based software application at no charge. CSCA has negotiated an agreement with iClays covering all NSCA targets registered in the 2010 shoot year. (iClays can also be used to register and score other events, in which case the club would be responsible for paying for the use of the application. Standard fees are $.01/target scored.) In addition to registration, scoring, automatic calculation of punches and AA points, clubs can also benefit from the ability to promote shooting events via email distributions to NSCA members within a designated distance of the shooting venue. Furthermore, iClays is pioneering a handicapping system much like that used in PGA golf that can be used in lieu of (or in addition to) Lewis Class options, or even the main event prizes and awards. Check out recent results from Rio Brazos on the iClays web site to see how this works out. In the 11/17 event, for instance, a C class shooter won the Handicapped overall!
